Abigail Poplin’s work is ethereal and phantasmic, luring in the viewer with images of entrancing femme fatales and vampy sirens. With inspirations drawn from the periods of Pre-Raphaelite to Art Nouveau to campy Retro pin-ups, she expresses women's ancient and eternal control over the sexual realm.
As a Southern woman, Abigail’s work harnesses a brutal sensuality that balances between the arousing and the repulsive. Walking a fine line between the healthy and the decaying, the beautiful and the grotesque, Abigail’s work finds a way using the claustrophobic discomfort of looking inward anatomically and thereby metaphorically. The work is meant to challenge as a catalyst to spur a personal investigation as to what is creating the discomfort. It seduces the viewer not to look away.
Originally from North Carolina, visual artist Abigail Poplin currently lives in New Orleans. Abigail received a BFA from East Carolina University and studied abroad in Florence, Italy. She has shown throughout the United States, with recent shows at Gravier Street Social, Treo Gallery, Niki Walker, and Pearl Wine. Poplin is a multi-medium artist with concentrations in jewelry making, design, and painting.
